MotionDSP Announces ‘Ikena’ Video Forensic Software

April 24, 2008 – San Mateo, Calif. – MotionDSP, an emerging leader in digital video technology, today announced the immediate availability of Ikena™, state-of-the-art video forensic software that runs on standard Microsoft© Windows©-based laptops and desktops in both law-enforcement labs and remotely in the field.
Ikena uses MotionDSP’s patented software algorithms which combine information from neighboring frames to reveal detail from previously ‘impossible’ scenes – moving objects or scenes with complex motion — that competing solutions cannot enhance. Ikena is easy-to-use, and can be used in ‘automatic-mode’ to extract real information in seconds: a crucial requirement for in-the-field use. Ikena can also extract more detail from fewer frames of poor-quality video than competing solutions – a few frames instead of hundreds.

With a simple-to-operate user interface, anyone can easily and quickly obtain valuable results. In the hands of a video forensics specialist, Ikena can literally achieve results that were considered impossible with previous competitive solutions.

“As one of the nation’s leading authorities in video forensics, my job is to extract the most minute details from poor video evidence – and we are considered one of the best in the country for this sensitive work,” said Robert Sanderson, President of Audio Video Forensics Labs (Poughkeepsie NY). “The issues of video noise can be devastating to recovering detail needed for a forensics case or homeland security analysis – and this has been an issue for years with other solutions.”

“MotionDSP’s Ikena technology is the best I have used in 27 years on the job – in a gangland shooting case investigated by Chicago law enforcement and the District Attorney’s office, Ikena brought out details as fine-grained as clothing logos. This was recovered from footage shot more than one hundred feet away in the worst possible conditions. Without Ikena, those details would have been forever lost. In addition, MotionDSP has been remarkably responsive to incorporate industry feedback into their product plans and roadmap – in other words, I am incredibly impressed with this company and technology.”

MotionDSP was funded by a strategic investment and technology advancement agreement with In-Q-Tel, the independent strategic investment firm that identifies innovative technology solutions to support the mission of the Central Intelligence Agency and the broader U.S. Intelligence Community.

“Ikena is a huge step forward in video forensics, a software market that has seen little innovation over the last decade,” said Dr. Sean Varah, CEO of MotionDSP. “The last advances — frame averaging and NASA’s VISAR technology – were released almost 10 years ago. In the meantime, video has exploded, and video forensic labs are buried with projects – from digital surveillance footage to cell-phone video. We’ve designed Ikena to be used by not only by video forensic experts, but more importantly the people working the cases: detectives, analysts, and security professionals. Ikena is the latest advancement in the technology In-Q-Tel declared the industry ‘gold-standard’ – and we’re pleased to offer it to the security community.”

Ikena is available immediately – interested parties can fill out a sales inquiry form on MotionDSP’s website to obtain further details and pricing.
